  1. 1. Are your important files backed up automatically, with a copy kept somewhere other than the office?

One copy at the office isn't enough if something happens to the office itself.

  2. 2. Has anyone restored files from those backups in the past year, to check that they work?

Backups can fail quietly. The only proof is a successful restore.

  3. 3. Is multi-factor authentication turned on for email and other important accounts?

With multi-factor authentication, signing in takes a code or an app approval as well as the password.

  4. 4. Is your business email filtered for spam, scams and viruses before it reaches your team?

Email is one of the most common ways ransomware and scams reach a business.

  5. 5. Do your computers and server get security updates automatically, or does someone make sure they're installed?

Many attacks use security holes that already have a fix.

  6. 6. Does every computer, including laptops that leave the office, have security software that's running and up to date?

One unprotected laptop can bring an infection into the office.

  7. 7. Is your office Wi-Fi protected by a strong password, with visitors on a separate guest network?

A visitor on your main network can reach the same computers your staff use.

  8. 8. When staff work from home or on the road, do they connect through a VPN or Remote Desktop set up for your business?

Personal remote-access apps and files emailed back and forth are hard to secure.

  9. 9. Does everyone have their own login, and are accounts closed as soon as someone leaves?

Shared logins and old accounts are easy ways in, and hard to trace.

  10. 10. Do your staff know how to spot a suspicious email, and who to call if something goes wrong?

A quick call at the first sign of trouble can stop a problem from spreading.

What this checkup can and can't tell you

It covers common basics that apply to almost every office. It can't see how your systems are actually set up, and a “yes” here only means something is in place, not that it's configured well. For that, our Free Network & Security Assessment looks at your real network and technology and recommends ways to protect your business.
